elkford community centre

Elkford, BC

1,550 m²

2012

Located in Elkford’s commercial retail centre, The Elkford Community Centre creates a bold, unique statement for the community. A mixed-use spatial program provides ample space for Travel BC offices, a daycare facility, 300 person hall, small group class rooms and commercial grade kitchen.

The use of Cross Laminated Timbers (CLT), glu-lam beams and structural insulated panels allowed for quick construction in a remote location and produced a high-insulating building envelope.

The strong aesthetic link to the local vernacular of the Elk Valley and mountains reflects community culture and sustainability. The community centre has enhanced community pride and programming.  It also gives Elkford the flexibility to attract small conferences, supporting community economic development and revenue.

The community centre was highlighted by BC Wood Council for innovative use of wood systems. It also received the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) Wood WORKS! Community Recognition Award.
